Have you worked around asbestos? Watch for these symptoms

Any number of industries generously used asbestos and products made from asbestos between the 1960s and the 1980s. Since that time, you may have heard that exposure to asbestos could cause numerous serious and fatal illnesses, including mesothelioma.

You may also already know that it could take decades from your last exposure to the toxic substance for you to exhibit symptoms of mesothelioma. Complicating matters further, more than one type of the disease exists. So, what should you watch out for as you age?

Peritoneal mesothelioma

Like many other Pennsylvania industrial workers, you may believe that mesothelioma is a lung disease. However, this type of the disease originates in the abdomen. If you experience the following symptoms for a prolonged period, you may need to consult with your doctor:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Abdominal pain
  • Tissue lumps in the abdomen

These symptoms could indicate any number of conditions, which is why it can't be stressed enough that you need to tell your doctor about your exposure to asbestos regardless of how long ago it occurred.

Pleural mesothelioma

This type of the disease does affect the tissue around your lungs. Experiencing any of the following symptoms for a significant amount of time requires examination by a physician:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain under the rib cage
  • Tissue lumps under the skin on your chest
  • Painful coughing

Once again, these symptoms could indicate any number of conditions. You should inform your doctor that you were exposed to asbestos at some point in your career, even if it was decades ago.

Rare types of mesothelioma

These diseases are rare enough, but two types are even rarer. The first is pericardial mesothelioma, which attacks the tissue around your heart. This may be difficult to diagnose since the symptoms include chest pain and difficulty breathing. The second, called mesothelioma of tunica vaginalis, attacks the testicles and a mass on or swelling of a testicle could indicate the condition.

Diagnosis of mesothelioma

Obviously, this particular disease can attack different parts of your body. The symptoms will vary depending on several factors and often mimic or represent many other illnesses, which makes it difficult to receive an accurate diagnosis. The importance of advising your doctor of your exposure to asbestos cannot be stressed enough.

If you receive a diagnosis of some form of mesothelioma, you may seek compensation for the impact it will have on your life and the lives of your family members.
