What health dangers are associated with Depakote?

Depakote is primarily used as an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer. It's prescribed to treat bipolar disorder, epilepsy and migraines. It helps to calm the brain and slows brain cells down by preventing them from communicating with each other too rapidly.

Depakote is not an antidepressant even though it's used to treat manic depressive and bi-polar disorder. It is often used alongside certain kinds of antidepressant serotonin re-uptake inhibitors to alleviate symptoms of depression. Nevertheless, Depakote has been found to cause serious and dangerous side effects.

Depakote side effects include:

-- Liver dammage

-- Inflamed pancreas

-- Worsening depression that results in suicidal thoughts

-- Birth defects such as neural tube defects, cognitive impairment and spinal Bifida.

Due to these serious and potentially fatal side effects, in addition to other less serious side effects, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning about Depakote. For example, FDA warns against treating pregnant women suffering from migraines with Depakote because studies have shown children born to women who took Depakote while pregnant have lower IQs. The FDA says that the only time pregnant women should take Depakote for bipolar disorder or epilepsy is when other treatment options were ineffective.

There have been many Depakote birth defect lawsuits. These claims largely hinge on the fact that Abbot Laboratories neglected to warn patients and doctors about Depakote's birth defect dangers.

Pennsylvania residents who suspect that they or a loved one were harmed by Depakote may want to talk to a lawyer about filing a lawsuit. It is important to seek this kind of assistance as soon as possible due to the fact that defective drug claims have a statute of limitations -- or time limit -- within which plaintiffs must file their lawsuits.
