Interstate 95 accident kills 22-year-old passenger

When we get in our vehicles, we never expect to get into a car accident as well -- and we certainly don't expect to get hurt or killed. Nevertheless, this danger is real, and when we get on a fast-moving interstate or highway, we're especially at risk. A fatal Interstate 95 accident that happened last Friday morning illustrates these risks all too well.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, they were trying to pull over a 1999 Honda Acura for a speeding violation. However, instead of stopping, the 23-year-old man driving the Acura decided to give police a chase. He didn't come to a stop until driving into a concrete barrier close to I-95's Exit 40.

The force of the collision caused the vehicle to flip over, and a 22-year-old female passenger was killed. The driver, along with two other passengers -- a 16-year-old and a 19-year-old -- were extremely lucky to survive the incident, but not without requiring hospital care.

During their investigations of the accident site, police found what they suspect is marijuana and heroin in the vehicle and the driver's pockets. Authorities have already charged the driver with third-degree murder, and it's possible that they could decide to charge the man with more crimes upon the completion of their investigations. As of last reports, he was being held under guard at St. Mary Medical Center until his condition has improved enough for him to be transferred to Bucks County Correctional Facility.

Family members of people killed in car accidents that result from unlawful activity -- such as speeding and evading police -- may be able to pursue wrongful death claims against the parties at fault for the accidents. If successfully navigated, such claims could bring money to pay for end of life expenses and other compensation for the loss of their loved ones.
