You might think that you're safe if you only take pharmaceutical drugs that have been on the market for a long time. Think again. One widely popular drug prescribed to treat acne was on the market for over 30 years, and it was one of the most dangerous drugs ever to hit the market. What was this awful medication? Accutane.
Nobody wants to have unsightly acne blemishes. Accutane was supposed to be the miracle drug to treat the chronic acne. It showed up on the market in the 1980s, and everybody wanted to use it. That's because it often worked well to resolve patients' acne.
However, not all doctors were convinced about the safety of Accutane. For 30 years, physicians brought up their worries about the drug's safety. That's because doctors noticed many kinds of health complaints in their patients who took Accutane. Women suffered from spontaneous abortion and their babies sometimes suffered from birth defects. Accutane users also suffered from depression more often than other patients and this depression sometimes led to suicidal thoughts.
The maker of Accutane, Roche Pharmaceuticals, stopped making the product in 2009. However, there are generic versions of the drug still being sold. Roche Pharmaceuticals has been hit with nearly 5,000 lawsuits relating to injuries caused by Accutane. Considering all the lawsuits, why does the FDA allow this drug to stay on the market?
If you believe that you or a family member suffered Accutane-related injuries, or injuries related to a generic version of Accutane, you might want to speak with a pharmaceutical drug litigation lawyer to evaluate whether you can pursue a claim for damages in civil court.
