What are some symptoms of mesothelioma?

One of the major issues with diagnosing mesothelioma is that the symptoms are similar to those brought on by other issues. Since this is an aggressive type of cancer, a correct diagnosis needs to be made as soon as possible.

It's also worth noting that symptoms may not fully show up until a late stage of mesothelioma. People sometimes think minor symptoms are just everyday sicknesses and minor ailments at the beginning.

In addition, there are three major types of mesothelioma: pleural, peritoneal and pericardial. They may have different symptoms.

Since it's important to properly identify mesothelioma early, here are some of the key symptoms to watch out for, drawn from all three types of the disease:

  1. An irregular heartbeat or heart palpitations, known as an arrhythmia
  2. Frequent coughing
  3. Shortness of breath, which is known as dyspnea
  4. Pain in the chest
  5. Weight loss that cannot be explained
  6. Low blood sugar, which is known as hypoglycemia
  7. Blood clots
  8. A buildup of fluid, which is known as peritoneal effusion
  9. Hoarseness and any trouble breathing
  10. Unexplained or excessive fatigue
  11. Dysphagia, which means trouble swallowing
  12. A fever and/or excessive sweating at night
  13. Low oxygen levels, known as hypoxemia

Naturally, not all people with the disease are going to see all of these symptoms, and this is not a comprehensive list of all possible symptoms. However, it does give you a good place to start and it shows you the type of issues you should watch out for.

If you develop mesothelioma, lung cancer and/or asbestosis after asbestos exposure, make sure you know all of the legal options that you have.
